About the Artist: The Artist Eugene McDonald, known as Gene, was a prominent Nebraska painter in the 1940's. This painting was done while Gene was a trainee of the Rehabilitation Division of the Old State of Vocational Education. At this time Gene lived with his aunt and uncle, The McClouds of York, Nebraska. Some of Gene's better work and some of lesser artisitic value were sold during the latter part of his training which was conducted under the personal direction of Norman C. Rockwell and the direction of other famous artists of the same period. The Rehabilitation Division assisted Gene in the sale of several of these paintings which were published in Life Magazine among other publications. For more than two years Gene's paintings were on display at various times in the Old House Chamber of the Unicameral (East Chamber) and were one of the State Capitol's major attractions to the visiting public. Many of these pictures were sold. Some were given away by Gene to galleries and to organizations who sold them for benevolent purposes. Some of Gene's paintings have been permanently placed on display in the general offices of the State Department of Vocational Education in the State Capitol.
