This is an original brochure from the first exhibition outside Montana of noted Western artist and sculpture Earl Erik Heikka. This exhibition was sponsored by the wealthy Montana copper mining baron and art patron William Andrews Clark III who discovered the nineteen year old Heikka in 1930. Clark arranged for Heikkaâs first high profile exhibition the following year at the Earl Stendahl gallery in the landmark Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Heikkaâs career would have a meteoric rise which saw his work displayed at the 1933 Worldâs Fair in Chicago and commissioned by Marshall Field, Gary Cooper and other luminaries of the day. Heikka was the heir apparent to the Western Sculpture tradition associated with C. M. Russell and Frederic Remington and indeed much of Heikkaâs work is on display today at the Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana. Heikkaâs life would end tragically in 1941 at only 31 years of age but his work endures and is among the most coveted of the western sculpture tradition. This brochure is an original item from the 1931 Stendahl exhibition in Los Angeles. The brochure is a two piece format with the covers printed on black and silver slick glossy paper printed A New Sculpture â Stendahl. Contained within the covers is a foldout piece with three panels giving information on Heikka and showing photographs of some of his sculptures including The Roper, Fresh Meat, Bronco Buster and Big Horn Hunt. Heikkaâs name is actually spelled âEarl Heikaâ in this brochure which I am not sure is a mistake or done deliberately. The staples have rusted leaving some rust staining around the staple area but the brochure is otherwise in good shape and a very rare item indeed. Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
