Up for auction is a Rare, Western Print Portfolio, Four Fully-Illustrated Western Art Book, plus an Out-of-Print Magazine Article pertaining to the life and artwork of American artist, painter, sculptor and author, Frederic Remington (1861-1909). First is the Rare Portfolio, Portfolio of Six Western Prints by Frederic Remington [n.p.][n.d.]. Portfolio contains six different duo-color illustrations by Remington with the title of each work on the lower portion of the print. Each print is on off-white paper with a dark orange frame around each work. The fact that there is no identification of a publisher or a publication date, leads me to believe that this was a promotional item and not commercial sold in bookstores or art galleries. The prints are housed in a stock, illustrated folder. The prints and folder are in excellent condition—a very handsome set. Prints measure h-8 ½ x w-11; folder measures h-8 ½ x w-11 inches. Second is, Frederic Remington: Artist of the Old West by Harold McCracken. NY: J. B. Lippincott Co., 1947. 246 pages. First Edition. Featuring over 80 full-color and b/w artwork reproductions—many of which are full page—including paintings, line drawings, halftone reproductions and photographs from bronzes—this beautiful volume chronicles the life and artwork of Remington, from this work with Harper’s Weekly and Collier’s, his paintings, being a war correspondent for the Spanish-American War, his fame, his death, plus much more. This also provides a Bibliographic Check Lists of works by Remington, a complete Index, a listing of artworks, and an Introduction by James Chillman, Jr.. Bound in black woven cloth with gilt lettering and design to spine; in original color illustrated dustjacket. Book is in very good plus condition; dustjacket in very good condition with open and closed tears with back panel flap removed. Overall, a very attractive volume. Measures h-12 ¼ x w-9 ¾ inches. Third, is the Out-of-Print book, Frederic Remington’s Own West, written and illustrated by Frederic Remington. NY: Dial Press, 1960. 254 pages. First Edition. Edited by Harold McCracken. With 115 Remington illustrations, this contains many of Remington’s works for Century, Harper’s Monthly and Colliers providing a first hand account by the artist of the daily lives and adventures of the Old West. Contents include: Part One: In The Old Southwest On The Indian Reservation Natchez’s Pass A Rodeo at Los Ojos Soldiering in the Southwest How an Apache War Was Won Plus Much More… Part Two: On The Northern Plains The Story of the Dry Leaves The Buffalo Dance Order of the Blackfeet Sun Dance Thanksgiving Dinner for the Ranch The Sioux Outbreak in South Dakota Plus Much More… In addition to Remington’s writings, this also includes an Introduction by Harold McCracken pertaining to Remington’s writings, artwork, and observations. Bound in brown woven cloth with gilt signature to cover and gilt lettering to spine with color illustrated dustjacket. Very good condition with minor shelfwear and previous owner’s signature on the front flyleaf. Measures h-10 ¼ x w-7 ½ inches. Fourth is the Out-of-Print volume, Frederic Remington: Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture in the Amon Carter Museum by Peter Hassrick. NY: Harry N. Abrams, Inc. 1975. 157 pages. Featuring 52 full-color and b/w painting reproductions and 23 photographs of Remington’s bronze works, this volume also includes a Foreword by Ruth Carter Johnson and an illustrated Introduction pertaining to the life and works of the artist and well as photographs of Remington. An essay accompanies each artwork plate and photograph. Bound color illustrated wrappers. Very good plus condition with minor staining to the lower right corner. Measures h-11 x w-9 inches. Fifth is, The Illustrations of Frederic Remington, with a Commentary by Owen Wister. NY: Bounty Books, 1970. 192 pages. Featuring over 200 illustrations by Remington, this is the first printed volume to bring all of Remington’s illustrations together in one place—including cowboys and vaqueros, the Indian, soldiery, bull fighting, fishing and hunting, sports, architectural studies and landscapes, plus much more. Includes a biographical essay by Marta Jackson and an essay by Owen Wister. Bound in red woven cloth with gilt lettering to spine; in original illustrated dustjacket. Excellent condition. Measures h-8 ¾ x w-11 1/8 inches. Sixth is the Illustrated Article, “Remington: The Man & The Myth by Louise E. Levates in the August 1988 issue of National Geographic. Featuring 30 full-color artwork reproductions, photographs, b/w illustrations and vintage photographs, this article examines the life and work of Remington—his amazing career, his artwork, the subjects of his work, plus much more. Complete issue 268 pages. Bound in color pictorial wrappers. Very good plus condition. Measures h-10 x w-6 7/8 inches.
