Original Drawing "After Darley" Emmigration to Western Country Signed in Lower Right by "H.S." After the Original by F. O. C. Darley ~~Undated~~ ************************************** Original pencil or charcol on paper-covered board. Measures 16 inches wide by 12 1/4 inches tall. The top left of the drawing has written "...migration to Western County (After "Darley")." Along the bottom edge seems to be written "KL1382 -- 9 -- 133 pc ------3 1/2"." At the lower right of the drawing are the initials "HS". There are pin holes at the top and the bottom of the board. Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1821-1888) was an American illustrator born in Philadelphia, Pa. He was prolific and popular and illustrated for Lossing's "History of the United States" as well as for the works of Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, Henry W. Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens, and for Edgar Allan Poe's "The Gold Bug". We do not know who did the actual rendition of this drawing. It is from the original of Darley's "Emmigration to the Western Country" and is signed "HS". It is a very good hand-drawn copy of Darley's work, and it could have been a copy drawn up as an illustration in a book. There are some identifying marks on the reverse of the board, but the printer's information is cut in half. The board was manufactured or sold in New York, and some type of mark was offered which is mostly trimmed away. On one edge of the reverse is printed "34290", and written beneath it is "8346". **Important Note: Make sure you check out our other auctions this week.
