Buying & Selling Antiques & Art in Nashville, Indiana for Over 30 Years CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR OTHER ITEMS ALBERT BIERSTADT (1830 - 1902) "The Rocky Mountains" Entered according to act of congress in the year 1866 by Edward Bierstadt in the Clerks Office of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Painted by A. Bierstadt Engraved by J. Smillie Overall dimensions: About 25" x 34" Image dimensions: About 17" x 28" I bought an estate a few weeks ago and was thrilled to find this. You can see that it's got some condition issues but there's nothing here that can't be fixed. Although I don't collect stuff like this, I was very tempted to keep it and have it restored. Alas, I need money for sundry other things, so now the Bierstadt is on Ebay. The print has been mounted to a thin piece of board. There are a few ripples and bubbles. As you can see from the picture there are some lines of foxing. There is one small hole under the words, "The Rocky Mountains" I can see no evidence that the picture has been conserved before. I suspect as far as these prints go, this is in relatively good "as found" condition. Most importanly, the colors are still vibrant. I've found a couple like this that have sold at auction within the last ten years. If I remember right one sold for $3,600 and the other for $4,500. At least one was in similar condition to this one. About Albert Bierstadt from Askart.com: Born in Solingen, Germany in 1830, Bierstadt moved to Massachusetts with his family as a youth. Twenty-one years later, he returned to his home country to study painting at the Dusseldorf Academy, where he formed close friendships with Emanuel Leutze and Worthington Whittredge. After several years of study in landscape, genre and historical painting, he and his fellow American painter-friends made a sketching trip to the Swiss Alps. Upon his return to the U.S. in 1857, Bierstadt opened a studio at 15 Tenth Street in New York City and went on summer excursions to the White Mountains. Soon he traveled frequently to the Rocky Mountains and the California coast to paint from nature. From 1871 to 1873, Bierstadt traveled throughout California, where he visited the Farallons in April 1872. The Farallons are a group of islands in the Pacific, twenty-six miles west of San Francisco, CA. A lighthouse keeper and his family maintained a home on the otherwise deserted islands and it is likely the artist stayed with them while he sketched the seal-covered coast. Seals was probably painted shortly after Bierstadtâ��s visit in the Farallons. According to travel literature describing the area, â��This is a wild and beautiful scene. The sharp pointed rocks are standing boldly out against the sky, and covered with birds and sea lions.â�� (Hutchings, California Magazine, August 1856, p. 52; 55) In May of 1872, the San Francisco Bulletin reported that, â��Mr. Bierstadt returned from the Farallons yesterday. He has produces sketches for a marine painting of the Isles, and will doubtless give us a faithful likeness.â�� (Bulletin, San Francisco, May 2, 1872). Bierstadtâ��s exceedingly desirable and rare paintings of seals upon rocks are internationally recognized as some of his most expressive, well-painted canvases. About James Smillie from Askart.com: the following, submitted August 2005, is from Victoria Clark, professional art historian. James Smillie was born on 23 November 1807 in Edinburgh,Scotland. In 1819, he apprenticed under John Johnston, silver engraver, and Edward Mitchell, pictorial engraver. He was the son of David Smillie Sr (1781-1827) and Elizabeth Cumming (1782-1852). The family immigrated to Quebec, Canada, establishing a silver-plating and engraving business. James Smillie began original etchings ofpictorial subjects for "Picture of Quebec", written by Rev George Bourne, and from that time Smillie was dedicated to etching. He completed studies in Edinburgh under Andrew Wilson, and by 1828 had become an accomplished reproductive engraver. He moved his family to New York to undertake a series called "Views of New York" published by George Melksham Bourne. He married Catherine Van Valkenburgh on 29 March 1832. Of their eight children, two became artists of established reputations: James D Smillie, 1835, and George Henry Smillie, 1840. In 1837, he started work on banknotes, specializing in vignettes, and he worked with his brother, William Cummings Smillie. In 1850 he started making prints for the American Art Union, a forum organized in 1839 for emerging artists. He contracted to engrave an entire series for Thomas Cole's painting "Voyage of Life."
