This is Vintage themed artwork created around 1900-1949. This Original Print is offered by the Dealer or Reseller located in SPOKANE, WA, zip code unknown. This is amazing work if you like Birds art.

Rex Brasher Rex Brasher never veered from the lifelong ambition he first formulated at the age of 10 to draw all the birds of North America. The story of his life is so moving, riveting and detailed that we cannot do justice to it here but refer the reader on to our list of references. Born in July 1869, the son of amateur ornithologist & taxidermist, Philip Marston Brasher, he was descended from a prominent French Huguenot family. Raised in an environment where ornithology was ever present, there was much critical discussion in the household of bird art, including the imperfections in Audubons work. Brasher attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn. Impoverished after the death of his father, he went at the age of 15 to work at Tiffanys in the engraving department. This comprised the extent of his training in art or ornithology apart from some experience in taxidermy and work at a Port land, Maine photo-engraver. An adventurous young man with no attachments, he sailed a small sloop down the length of the Atlantic Coast to Key West, Florida, observing and sketching the abundant bird species in his travels in much the same spirit as those who preceded him had for almost 300 years. After returning to Brooklyn, New York, he spent the major part of his life perfecting his drawings, several times destroying his sketches and beginning again. A lifetime bachelor, he was not impeded in his goals by the need to support a family. Throughout the years, he roamed North America sketching birds, taking whatever casual work he could to support his central mission, including road building, house painting, and as crew on a fishing boat. According to his great niece, Deborah Brasher, he once won $10,000 on a horse race which financed an extended trip to the Midwest. In 1907, Brasher met the famous bird painter, Louis Agassiz Fuertes, at American Museum of Natural History, and they became good friends. Fuertes was very influential in the development of Brashers artistic range and technique. In 1911 Rex bought a 150 acre farm in Connecticut, the Chickadee Valley, with the $700 proceeds from a sale of book illustrations. Here, in 1928, almost 100 years after the publication of Audubons Birds of America, Brasher finished his paintings, which he considered the completion of the work begun by John James Audubon. It was truly a magnificent survey of the birds of North America based on 44 years of dedicated toil and sketching in the field. Dwarfing Audubons previous record of 489 species, it illustrated over 2500 figures of birds on 864 plates, with birds in different states of plumage and development. Listed were 1200 species and sub-species of birds according to the American Ornithologists Union (AOU) Checklist of North American Birds. The accompanying illustrations of tree species and bird habitat were also an important contribution to the field. After he had an estimate of $500,000 for the printing of his work, and in a manner which would not produce the colors with the accuracy desired, he made the monumental decision to hand color all the copies himself. It was a decision reminiscent of the great English bird Artist William Lewin, who produced 60 copies of his Birds of Great Britain, entirely hand done. After six months of toil, when Brasher had finished a hundred copies of the first volume, he realized that completion of the planned edition of 500 copies within his lifetime was impossible given his age of 60. The edition was cut to around 100 copies, for which he had 95 subscribers at a cost of $2,400 for each set. Sadly, the Great Depression intervened and 60 cancellations ensued, though the subscription level gradually rose again to 75, and included many tycoons of the day such as William Boeing and Paul Mellon, the banker. The majority of the volumes were printed in collotype by the Meriden Gravure Co. a printer of black and white reproductions, with the photogravures made from the original plates then individually hand colored by Brasher using an airbrush and a complex stenciling process similar to pochoir. His niece Marie wrote the text, which was published by the New Milford Times. The Brewer-Cantelmo Company of New York, still in business, made the bindings in a three hole portfolio style and the work was assembled in a barn on the Chickadee Valley Farm. In fact, it was entirely a cottage industry of the type practiced by printers and publishers of the past, including Benjamin Fawcett, the great English publisher. It was only two years before his death that failing eyesight stopped his lifetimes work and Rex Brasher died in 1960 at the age of 91 on his farm. There is no other American bird illustrator who has come even close to his monumental achievement and he surely ranks as not only one of the most gifted, but also one of the most underappreciated of all the great bird artists. We believe that he has yet to take his true place in the history of bird illustration. Originally exhibited in 1932 at the English Book Shop in New York City, the State of Connecticut bought the Brasher collection for $74,000 in 1941 and today it is housed today at the University of Connecticuts Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. His two grand nieces, Deborah Brasher & Melode Brasher reside on his farm and are involved in a fund raising effort to establish a museum to properly display his work. It is an exciting life at Panteek as we are privileged to see many of the finest works produced in the great era of print making in which we specialize, before they pass on to our circle of discriminating print collectors. However, the wonder and awe with which we all responded to this selection of Rex Brasher prints was truly unusual. The work resonated so much with us, it was almost as if a distillation of all the great bird artists, both American, European and even Japanese were present, yet with a unique and entirely original perspective. The sheer magnitude of the task from which Rex Brasher never veered, the amazing industry, perseverance and genius he applied to his mission and the sacrifices he made to present to the world this amazing work have yet to be truly recognized. We consider it the culmination of all works that have passed before and certainly the greatest American ornithological work. We are offering a selection of these extremely rare prints, all in excellent condition on strong paper with brilliant original hand coloring. Each print measures 18 inches long by 12 inches wide, an oblong folio. The prints were mounted on a stub of rayon on the left edge to be included in the binder and we have not trimmed this, but of course, it can be trimmed or framed out if you wish to maintain the print in its original state. There is a copy of the text for almost all the prints and a copy of the original title page signed by Brasher himself will be included. The scans we show do not do justice to the brilliance and subtlety of the hand coloring, so prepare to be as entranced as we are when you receive your order. Only 100 sets of this work were made. Please note no descriptive text. Please note all our prints are ORIGINAL antique prints with documented provenance. We do NOT sell reproductions of any type.
This is Realism themed art dating from 1900-1949. This Original Print is sold by the Dealer or Reseller located in Eastern U.S., zip code 06824. This is amazing to get if you want Birds art.

Rex Brasher published a set of 12 folio volumes containing 864 plates with more than 2500 individual images of birds, titled “Birds and Trees of North Americaâ€, completing this work in 1930. He spent a lifetime traveling all throughout America painting the birds and trees, and wrote the text for each plate. The paintings were then printed in black or dark sepia by the Meriden Gravure Company using the collotype process. A few plates also had some color printing. Brasher personally colored each plate by hand, using an air brush and stencils. He may have had some help with this monumental task. An edition of 500 sets was planned, but it is doubtful if more than 100 sets were ever completed. The sheets were hinged for post binding in 12 volumes. There is a story that Rex Brasher undertook this mammoth task to avenge his father’s having been insulted by Audubon. In his youth, Brasher senior supposedly applied to Audubon for bird painting lessons and was rudely turned away. To avenge his father’s humiliation, the son was determined to surpass Audubon’s Birds of America with his work. This print measures 12†x 16", and retains its linen hinge for the post binder, as issued. It is titled "WESTERN WILLET / Catoptrophorus inornatus". The print is signed and numbered 258a in the plate. It is in fine condition, with bright, original hand coloring, applied by Brasher himself. Brasher's text accompanies the print. PLEASE NOTE: All our prints are GUARANTEED to be ORIGINALS, NOT reproductions, re-strikes, facsimiles, scanned prints, giclees, "Vintage" re-prints, later editions, forgeries, or any other sort of copy, unless described as such.

This is Vintage style artwork dating from 1900-1949. This Original Print is sold by the Dealer or Reseller located in SPOKANE, WA, zip code unknown. This is beautiful to get if you like Birds art.

Rex Brasher Vireosylva gilva gilva Rex Brasher never veered from the lifelong ambition he first formulated at the age of 10 to draw all the birds of North America. Please note all our prints are ORIGINAL antique prints with documented provenance. We do NOT sell reproductions of any type.
This is western style art created around 1800-1899. This Original Print is offered by the Dealer or Reseller located in Cleveland, Ohio, zip code 44113. This is beautiful to get if you want Birds art.

C I R Q L A R Original antique prints, books, maps and atlases Image Name WESTERN BLUE BIRD. Plate # 135. Author/Artist John James Audubon: The Birds Of America. Date of Publication Published by J.J. Audubon, New York, 1840. Lithography by J.T. Bowen. Type of Print Original hand colored lithograph. Size of Image Royal octavo size: App. 6 1/2" X 10 1/4". Condition In overall very good to excellent condition. Remnant of previous binding on edge of sheet. Description We are pleased to offer this beautifully original hand colored lithograph by John James Audubon (1785-1851), from his monumental first edition octavo edition of The Birds Of America. Audubon was born in Haiti and upon his arrival in America, he began his ascendancy into recording natural history in North America. He completed this massive work, covering 500 hand colored plates all set in their natural surroundings, in just over four years. He originally sold the individual plates in 100 sets of five wrapped plates. Upon purchasing the one hundred sets of five plates, the subscriber then had the plates bound into a binding of his or her choosing. Only 1200 seven volume sets were published in the first edition. The first edition plates are easily distinguished from their later counterparts. First of all, the only edition that is fully hand colored are those prints from the first edition. In addition, later editions also had a darker background which was printed in colors as opposed to being hand colored. The overall condition of the plates is very good. They all have full margins, full contemporary (original) coloring and the fact that this set is so incredibly difficult to find and individual plates so correspondingly expensive (the complete set now runs upwards of $120,000) makes individual prints a solid investment. The years have been very good to these particular plates as you can see. You are bidding on a truly investment grade print with no associated apologies necessary. Printed on thick stock paper, these plates have amazing detail. They frame up very well and look great individually or in a grouping. We would be delighted to include a copy of the original title page if so desired: just ask! We are delighted to be able to offer all 500 of these fine first edition Audubon Birds Of America prints at highly competitive "buy it now" prices. We encourage you to contact us with any particular questions you might have. Thank you for looking and please be sure and look at our other auctions for other fine works by Audubon from the first as well as the 1860 editions of the Birds Of America. We also have other architectural, natural history plates as well as original maps, all guaranteed original. We do not use the eBay check-out system for invoicing so it is not necessary to email us at auction end. You will receive an email from Paypal letting you know the particular payment options available to you. We will also send you an email summarizing your winning bids along with one combined postal charge. We will email you this summary within 24 hours after the auction's end. Cirqlar is a SquareTrade seller in good standing and we will do everything we can make this a positive experience for you. We don't hold checks for clearance (we have yet to receive a bad check after over 25,000 transactions!). Again, we will be happy to combine purchases to save on your shipping costs. News flash! We are now using USPS for our North American shipments. Shipments are easy to track, and, well, frankly we have only lost one singular package out of the tens of thousands of packages we have sent. Good job USPS! If you are one of our International friends, please contact us with your particulars (name of country, insurance requirements if any) so that we might get as accurate a quote as possible to get your purchase to you in a timely fashion. Please note that we now have (finally, mercifully) a legitimate "about me" section where you can find more information about who we are and what we do as well as more tips on collecting prints and the various types of printing techniques that have been used over the years. In addition, we have hundreds of rare prints and colorplate books, maps and atlases at set prices. We have recently been fortunate enough to acquire, for example, the original watercolors from Lewin's "Birds of Great Britain". We also have listed several prints from Shaw and Nodder's "The Naturalist's Miscellany", flower prints from Curtis' "Flora Londinensis", P.J. Redoute's "Les Liliacees". Please also check out our ebay listings for some phenomenal Abbeville edition elephant folio restrikes of Audubon's "Birds Of America" which are what many refer to as the preeminent 20th century facsimile edition of this important work. We will be updating this frequently. We are committed to offering the very best antique prints available with over the top superior service.
