The Art of Saul LishinskyThe artist Saul Lishinsky was born in 1922 in the USA from Russian Jewish immigrant parents. In the early part of his career he worked for the Federal Arts Project of the WPA. He had many shows in New York City, the last one at the Westbeth Gallery in 2006. The artist Raphael Soyer said of Lishinsky: "What impresses me about Saul Lishinsky's work is his awareness of our time-its artistic complexities, its dynamics and aesthetics. His interest in, and his understanding of the many trends in art today are reflected in his work which is fresh, colorful, personal and imaginative." Lishinsky still lives in NYC today. Lishinsky closed his studio at Westbeth in 2008. The contents of his studio are now being sold on this site and we will be listing many of his pencil sketches, ink drawings and watercolor paintings. All drawings are either signed or official stamp signed. Condition: See Photo for condition.

This is Realism style artwork dating from 1900-1949. This Original is sold by the Dealer or Reseller located in Milford, NH, zip code 03055. This is nice work if you want Landscapes art.

Otto Plaug (German-American; 1898 - 2000) Untitled [Southwestern Landscape] Charcoal on off-white laid paper Circa 1920s 11.75 x 15.5 in. Unsigned; identifying ink stamp verso Condition: Excellent About the artist: Born in Dessau, Germany, Otto Plaug emigrated to the United States with his parents in the first decade of the twentieth century. After demonstrating an unusual aptitude for art at an early age, Plaug produced remarkably accomplished work by the time he was a teenager. After briefly returning to Europe to pursue formal art studies, Plaug continued his training in the U.S., where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life. Primary among his early influences was an apprenticeship at a western-themed artists' colony, an experience that enabled him to work alongside such prominent figures as Edward Borein and W. Herbert Dunton (who dedicated a painting to him). Indeed, cowboys, Native Americans, and western landscapes infuse much of Plaug's work of the 1910s and 1920s. Plaug later studied with Hans Hofmann, one of the seminal figures of the Abstract Expressionist movement, whose influence is evident in Plaug's works from the 1950s onward. Over the course of his career, which spanned more than eight decades, Plaug's ever-evolving work was marked by a highly individual synthesis of his personal tastes and creative aims with wider artistic currents and prevailing styles. Following the realistic, representational mode of his early drawings, much of Plaug's work of the 1910s and early 1920s exhibits a sophisticated Art Deco stylization, often recalling (and perhaps even anticipating) the bold, dramatic graphic style of such artists as Rockwell Kent and Lynd Ward. At the same time, Plaug was clearly influenced by German expressionism and the Jugendstil and Arts and Crafts movements. Much of his work in this vein is symbolic or allegorical, employing themes from mythology, literature, and nature; in other cases, Plaug turned his eye to his immediate surroundings, producing exquisite, beautifully colored, floral studies, forest scenes, and landscapes that recall the work of Gustave Baumann. Plaug also produced much figural work, from studio nudes to genre scenes. In the 1930s, his subject matter and style began to take on the characteristics of American regionalism and social realism; many of his works from this period depict people at work and in social situations. During World War II he channeled much energy to defense-related efforts, and, like so many artists, to creating images to promote the Allied cause; at other times, he was evidently also engaged in "civilian" advertising and commercial projects. By the 1950s Plaug had begun a deep and extended engagement with abstraction, producing a number of dynamic works that employed geometric elements, symbolism and surrealism, and drip techniques in various combinations. By the 1980s, his "abstract" mode had evolved into juxtapositions of pure color, sometimes shading one into the next. Throughout his career, Plaug demonstrated mastery in a wide range of media, including pencil and ink drawings, crayons and pastels, watercolors, printmaking (especially woodblocks), and oils. A longtime instructor at Skidmore College, Plaug last exhibited his work in 1999, having witnessed virtually every major art movement from the epochal accomplishments of Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso to the aesthetic antics of Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst.--The above copyright 2008 by ancientandmodern. Available here is an Original Oil on Board Painting by the famous Edgar Payne (1883-1947). This Great Western Oil Painting by Edgar Payne is a classic action depiction of the Native Americans raiding the "The Wagon Train Attack''... The size is 11.5'' x 15.5'' without the frame and 18'' x 21'' with frame....This painting is all original with no restoration and in good condition! There is a scratch on the painting on the upper left side as visible in pics (see pic number 7) if winning bidder wants - the dealer has a professional that can restore it, or the winning bidder can have it as it is....(please notify) The frame is not original..... The painting is signed on the lower right side bottom....Please e-mail with any questions and good luck bidding! Shipping will be $30 anywhere in the U.S. and $40 worlwide via U.P.S. Born in Washburn, Missouri, Edgar Payne became one of the foremost plein-air landscape painters of California in the early 20th century. He is best known for his majestic Sierra Nevada Mountain scenes, and depicted so many Indians on horseback riding through the Sierra Nevada Mountains that a mountain lake, Lake Payne, was named for him. He painted many works "en plein air" and also did numerous sketches from which he later did studio paintings. He worked quickly and completed about one painting per day. He depicted many other locations as well including the coast of Laguna Beach, the Canadian Rockies, the French and Swiss Alps, the Italian and French Riviera, fishing scenes of Italy and France, and landscapes in the Southwest including the Grand Canyon and Canyon de Chelly in Arizona. Payne was active in Chicago early in his career and there had a distinguished reputation for painting stage scenery for famous actresses and for mural painting. He left home at age 14 because his father objected so strongly to his son's dedication to an art career. He earned money painting houses, stage sets and murals, and traveled through the Ozarks, Texas, Mexico and Chicago where he received a major commission from the Congress Hotel for an 11,000 foot mural of Italian gardens. (Since destroyed). In Chicago, he was active with the Chicago Society of Artists and the Alumni Association of the Art Institute. He was self-taught except for a brief period at the Art Institute of Chicago. Of his art education, his daughter said: "My father never studied with anyone. He tried the Chicago Art Institute for a little while, but he didn't like it. He considered himself to be completely self-taught." ("Plein Air" 26) In 1909, he first visited California and painted scenes of Laguna Beach and San Francisco. During this time he discovered the beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains, where he returned continually throughout his career for the inspiration that led to his signature paintings and a turning from murals and stage sets to landscape painting. He married artist Elsie Palmer in 1912, and the couple with their daughter, Evelyn, born in 1914, moved to Laguna Beach. They rented a beach-side cottage while Edgar built a home, which was the only one the family ever owned. They lived in it for three years, and it was a uniquely stable time for the family that traveled frequently in search of painting subjects. Payne decided he wanted to have an art gallery for exhibiting artists, and in 1920 he became the founder and first president of the Laguna Beach Art Association and the Gallery of Laguna Beach. The first meeting was held in his studio. The Paynes later moved to Los Angeles so they could be closer to the Stendahl Galleries, which was in the Ambassador Hotel and represented his work. In 1916, the Santa Fe Railroad commissioned him to paint the Southwest, and the couple spent four months in Canyon de Chelly. They also traveled and sketched the Grand Canyon and scenes of New Mexico and spent several years, 1922 to 1924, in Europe. Payne had a commercial artist friend, George Evans, who visited them in Europe, and according to Payne's daughter, Evans and the Paynes spent much time looking at artwork in museum. In the 1923 Paris Salon, Payne won an Honorable Mention, which was significant recognition because more than 7000 paintings were exhibited. During the Depression, Payne took teaching jobs to earn money for him and his family, and he also wrote his book, "Composition of Outdoor Painting", which, with many printings, has been a popular guide to landscape painting. He and his wife continued to spend much time in New York City and had planned to build a house there, but did not start the project because of the economy. The couple separated in 1932, but Elsie, who subsequently had a very successful career, returned to live with him towards the end of his life when he was ill. A major problem between them was his dominant personality and her resentment that her own considerable talents were submerged by his demands. Apparently he felt remorse. Their daughter wrote that "the last words her father spoke to her on his last day of life in 1947 were that 'he was sorry he had been so selfish and that everything had been for his art.' " ("Plein Air" 26)

Original Drawing "After Darley" Emmigration to Western Country Signed in Lower Right by "H.S." After the Original by F. O. C. Darley ~~Undated~~ ************************************** Original pencil or charcol on paper-covered board. Measures 16 inches wide by 12 1/4 inches tall. The top left of the drawing has written "...migration to Western County (After "Darley")." Along the bottom edge seems to be written "KL1382 -- 9 -- 133 pc ------3 1/2"." At the lower right of the drawing are the initials "HS". There are pin holes at the top and the bottom of the board. Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1821-1888) was an American illustrator born in Philadelphia, Pa. He was prolific and popular and illustrated for Lossing's "History of the United States" as well as for the works of Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, Henry W. Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens, and for Edgar Allan Poe's "The Gold Bug". We do not know who did the actual rendition of this drawing. It is from the original of Darley's "Emmigration to the Western Country" and is signed "HS". It is a very good hand-drawn copy of Darley's work, and it could have been a copy drawn up as an illustration in a book. There are some identifying marks on the reverse of the board, but the printer's information is cut in half. The board was manufactured or sold in New York, and some type of mark was offered which is mostly trimmed away. On one edge of the reverse is printed "34290", and written beneath it is "8346". **Important Note: Make sure you check out our other auctions this week. NOTE: Giclee is a method of reproducing, in fine detail and original art print, poster or other paper keepsake. It is often stored on digital files. The GICLEE process uses vivid and bright UV inks, and archival canvas, or other paper. Giclee sees everything, and copies it perfectly. Some of the orignal pcs. are crisp and clear, while others are more obscure. Since these are smaller copies of BIG posters, some of the fine print may be harder to read. These are not photo copies, or low res. camera produced images. Various images will have different aspect ratios (or the proportion between width and height). We do not change the original attributes in any way. Our prints fit nicely into a standard 8 x 10 frame, or into a larger frame with 8 x 10 mat. These insets for these frames are smaller than 8 x 10, and images are made to be trimmed as needed. UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS THIS ITEM HAS A MINIMUM LIFE OF 100 YEARS. WE USE UV INKS TO MAKE OUR REPRODUCTIONS. Colors are vibrant, rich and true to the original pc.This item is also available on fine quality paper, and ready to frame.
