Dean J Meeker 1920-2002 Dean Meeker was born in Colorado on May 18, 1920, to the late Isaac and Jeanette (Edwards) Meeker. He attended Northwestern University part-time on the G.I. Bill, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he earned the degrees of Bachelors and Masters of Fine Art. In 1946, Meeker began his teaching career at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, and during his unprecedented 46-year tenure in the Department of Art, served under every Dean in the history of the School of Education. It is also notable that he was the first Art Department faculty member at the UW to have earned a Masters of Fine Art degree. Although Dean?s developing interest at the Art Institute was sculpture, at the University of Wisconsin he soon began to draw upon past experience to pioneer expanding fields of artistic expression. One of the ways he supported himself in his late teens during the depression was by painting billboards for a sign company, and when he moved east to Chicago, he found similar work. It was here, at a Midwest signage shop, that he was exposed to silk-screen printing techniques. With his infectious exuberance and creativity, Meeker transformed this once commercial process into evolving generations of increasingly complex expression. He found his motivating interest in art reflected in the Paul Klee quote ?Art is Process? - that one discovers principles through exploration, rather than allowing known principles to limit the work. In 1948, Meeker began teaching silk-screen by way of an unofficial and unaccredited course that he offered to his students. The popularity of his classes led to the creation, in 1950, of the first ever university-affiliated course in serigraphy. In 1954, he received the first Graduate School Research Grant awarded to Studio Art Faculty. In 1957, he was invited to exhibit the first one-person serigraphy show at the Print Department of the Art Institute of Chicago, which was instrumental in breaking the ?fine art? barrier for this medium. In 1959, while developing an innovative combination of serigraphy and intaglio printing, he was awarded the first Guggenheim Fellowship in the UW Art Department. Dean?s work held the distinction of being the first of any faculty to be the subject of a doctoral thesis in Art History. Meeker used his Guggenheim Fellowship, one of the many fellowships and grants awarded to him during his career, to build on his expertise of the intaglio process. It was a year of study in France that culminated in a one-man show at the La Gravure Gallery, Paris. He was one of the first printmakers to overprint silk-screens with polymer intaglio and, and to this end, he collaborated, with engineer John McFee, to invent the Meeker-McFee motorized etching press. The combination of these techniques allowed him to build images so seemingly three-dimensional that, as one critic said, they ?almost dance and sing.? It was this progression, from the flat sheet of the serigraph, to the combination of silkscreen and intaglio that brought Dean full-circle, back to his first love of sculpture. By the time he formally retired from the University in 1992, his artistic energy was prolific, as he cut, cast, rolled and formed bronze, copper, stainless steel, wax, wood and marble into figures and forms - from the small and personal, to the truly monumental. In 1988, the Hakone Open Air Museum in Japan commissioned Prof. Meeker to produce a large bronze sculpture entitled ?Minotaur? for the 2nd Rodin Grand Prize Exhibition. He was one of only two Americans selected for this International Competition, and was awarded the Utsukushi-Ga-Hara Prize for his work. Professor Meeker loved teaching almost as much as he loved creating. He inspired his students with his unquestionable passion and dedication to the field of art. He took great pride in following the achievements of his student?s careers, and, when at a loss to put a name with the face, he would ask, ?Describe your work?, which would bring back the details of their relationship. His advice to students was tellingly focused: ?Get up, go to work, and keep your brushes clean?. During his career, Meeker exhibited in 90 one-man shows, and was recognized as one of the outstanding printmakers in the country. During his tenure at the University of Wisconsin, the Department of Art?s graphics program ranked as ?world class? and ?number one in the nation? ? due, in no small part, to Dean?s contribution to the faculty. Professor Meeker also served as a Juror for prestigious competitions, contributed to numerous publications, and catalogued over 180 prints. This is a beautiful Eanger Couse oil depicting a Native American loom weaving lesson. The painting is in good, condition and measures 17&amp;quot; x 13&amp;quot; and is signed in the lower left-hand corner with the signature,,NA,,(National Academy).The Frame is also in good condition,and may be original. Eanger Irving Couse was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on September 3, 1866. He began to draw as a child, often sketching the Chippewa Indians of his hometown. He liked to listen to the stories told about the Indians, an interest which heralded his later paintings. Couse studied at the Chicago Art Institute, and later in Paris, in 1884, at the Julien Academy, and the School of Beaux Arts. He became the favorite pupil of William Bouguereau and won numerous awards as a student. In 1889, he married Virginia Walker, an American art student he met in Paris. In 1890, they returned to America and lived at her family&amp;acirc;s ranch in Oregon and in New York. Couse made many paintings of the Northwest Indians during his years in Oregon. In 1901, at the invitation of Joseph Henry Sharp, Ernest Blumenschein and Bert Phillips, the Couses traveled to Taos and immediately fell in love with the Southwest. Each year after that, they would summer in Taos and return to New York, where he would finish the paintings he started in Taos. In 1903, Couse went to Arizona, where he produced his rare paintings of the Hopi Indians. By 1928, the Couses had decided to permanently live in Taos. Couse became very active in the local art scene, becoming one of the six &amp;quot;Taos Founders&amp;quot; of the Taos Society of Artists, a group of legendary artists whose influence is still strongly felt in the art world today. Some of Couse&amp;acirc;s most important commissions came from the Santa Fe Railway. Only two of the twenty-two subjects reproduced on the Santa Fe Railway calendars were specifically commissioned by the Railway to coordinate with their advertising campaign and both were paintings of a Chief - this full figure painting and the 1934 bust of a Chief. Couse had already started on a painting called The Blanket when C.J. Black, the passenger traffic manager and senior member of the calendar committee, suggested that the 1928 calendar feature an Indian Chief to coordinate with the introduction of a new extra-fare train named &amp;quot;The Chief&amp;quot;. &amp;quot;The Chief in his war bonnet has ascended an eminence to watch the approaching train from the east - placing his was shield at his feet he gives the sign of welcome in the sign language by placing his right hand over his heart&amp;quot; His works are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, the Dallas Museum of Fine Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Milwaukee Art Center, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Philbrook Art Center, the Gilcrease Institute of Art, and the Museum of New Mexico, among numerous other collections both public and private. Charles Deas This Early Western Oil Painting by Charles Deas is a heart rendering depiction of a Native American at his Teepee. The size is 18&amp;quot;x 13&amp;quot;. The condition is good, no restoration. The frame appears original. The painting is signed on the lower left. Charles Deas, grandson of the Revolutionary War leader Ralph Izard, was exposed to art as a visitor at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art and in Sully&amp;acirc;s studio while receiving his general education from John Sanderson. He failed to gain appointment to West Point in 1936, when the Hudson River outdoor life attracted him more than life as a cadet. He then spent two years at the National Academy in New York City, exhibiting beginning 1838 &amp;acirc;a variety of cabinet pictures drawn chiefly from familiar life.&amp;acirc; During a visit to Philadelphia in 1838, he was enthralled by an exhibition of Catlin&amp;acirc;s Indian paintings: &amp;acirc;To visit the scenes of Nature&amp;acirc;s own children, to share the repast of the hunter and taste the wild excitement of frontier life.&amp;acirc; In 1840, Deas left the East to visit his brother at Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, only 10 years after Seth Eastman, at the same time as Stanley, and 10 to 20 years before the better-known Western artists. He collected sketches of Indians and frontier scenery. &amp;acirc;In passing from lodge to lodge, the most extraordinary incidents presented themselves, and in the stillness of the moonlit nights, the echoes of the Indian lover&amp;acirc;s flute blent with the battle-chant or the maiden&amp;acirc;s shrill song.&amp;acirc; In the winter of 1841 he visited Fort Winnebago, Fort Snelling, St. Anthony&amp;acirc;s Falls, and the Sioux. He had a permanent studio in St. Louis as his headquarters. In 1844, when he traveled to the Pawness, he was nicknamed &amp;acirc;Rocky Mountain&amp;acirc; because he dressed &amp;acirc;like a fur hunter&amp;acirc; and &amp;acirc;he could go where he pleased. Mr. Deas seemed to possess the whole secret of wining the good graces of the Indians. summerskies Store E.I. Couse (1866-1936) This oil painting by E.I. Couse is a sensitive depiction of Native Americans in their every day life, in this case a father and son during a lesson. The size 13&amp;quot; x 17&amp;quot;. The condition is good, no restoration or damage. The frame may be original. The painting is signed at the lower right and inscribed, &amp;quot;N.A.&amp;quot; (National Academy). Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Eanger Couse is primarily known for Taos Pueblo Indian males sitting or squatting by camp fire light, suggesting that Indians were peaceful, dignified human beings and not the savages of Western lore. Growing up in Saginaw, he lived among the Chippewa Indians and as a youngster did sketches of these native people. From a poor family, he was a determined artist who studied for three months at the Art Institute of Chicago, having earned just enough money by painting houses, and then he returned to Saginaw to earn more money so he could go to New York City which he did in 1885. He enrolled in the National Academy of Design and did many odd jobs to support himself, and after two years returned to Saginaw, again to earn money. In 1887, he went to Paris to the Academie Julian where his great influence became the superb draftsmanship and classical techniques of William Adolphe Bouguereau. Couse returned to Paris many times, and on one of these trips met his future wife, Virginia Walker, an art student whose family had a ranch in Oregon. When he and his wife visited her parents on a sheep ranch in Oregon, he painted the Yakima, Umatilla, and Klikitat Indians in the pastel colors of the French Barbizon School. However, there was little interest in Indian subject matter for fine art in America. He also painted pastoral scenes, which were more popular than his Indian subjects. Couse went back to France and settled in a rural town in the province of Pas de Calais on the English Channel and painted bucolic genre scenes, invariably with sheep on hillsides. Although he had stylistic influences from Europe, he became more and more determined to create an art that was uniquely American and was increasingly fascinated with Indians as subject matter. In 1902, Couse visited Taos, New Mexico for the first time, having heard about it in Paris from his friend, Joseph Henry Sharp. In Pueblo Indians, Couse found the subject matter that seemed right for him, but he had difficulty finding ones to pose because of their belief that the soul of the sitter passes into the picture once it is completed. In 1912, when the Taos Society of Artists was formed, he was elected its first president, and in 1927, he and his family moved there permanently. His wife died two years later, much affecting his spirit and the vitality of his paintings. Although he posed models for sketching outdoors, he continued to paint in his comfortable studio in a French academic manner. He also painted occasionally in Arizona, going first in 1903, to the Hopi ceremonies at Walpi. His models for most of his New Mexico Indian figure painting were Ben Lujan and Geronimo Gomez, Taos Pueblo residents. The tone is poetic and peaceful and reflects a civilization that is at peace with itself. Usually the squatting Indian figures were engaged in domestic activity such as preparing food, and their handsome physiques were accentuated by moonlight. Beginning 1914, his paintings were used on calendars by the Santa Fe Railway and became the basis for the company's comprehensive Southwest art collection. The first calendar painting was &amp;quot;Wal-si-el, Good Medicine&amp;quot;, which initiated the tradition of using Taos painters on the calendars, and twenty-three of them had work by Couse. Patterson: In 1884, at the age of 18, Couse was able to spend three months at the Chicago Art Institute before his money ran out. Undaunted, he returned home for a season of house painting. For the next two years,1885-1887,Couse was a student at the National Academy of Design in New York. Each year he won awards at the academy's student exhibitions. In 1887, Couse went to Paris, where he studied under Adolphe Bouguereau and Robert Fleury at the Academie Julian. For four years he won awards at the academy, which confirmed his skill and taste. In 1891, while in Paris, he married fellow art student Virginia Walker, a rancher's daughter from Washington near the Oregon border. The entire Couse family, including son Kibbey who was born in 1894 in Etaples, a coastal village, lived in France for several years. Within Couse's work is a group of French landscapes similar to his northwest American pieces: direct, broadly painted scenes of coastal fishing and pastorals of shepherds. These also were painted in low-key pastel colors. A pale moon can be found in several of these paintings. For a few years Couse earned his living from portraits, but he was a shrewd businessman and he understood the need to market his work from a New York base. By maintaining a studio in the city and always being present during the winter exhibition season, he created the network of contacts artists must have in order to sell their work. J.H. Sharp(1859-1953) This oil painting by J.H. Sharp is a sensitive depiction of a horseback meeting of important tribal leaders. The size is 18&amp;quot;x22&amp;quot;. The condition is good, no restoration. The frame may be original The painting is signed lower left. Born in Bridgeport, Ohio, Joseph Sharp was regarded as the &amp;quot;father of the Taos Art Colony,&amp;quot; and was known for his Indian figure and genre painting as well as for exquisitely colorful landscapes. He was one of the first Caucasian artists to visit New Mexico, arriving in Santa Fe in 1883. He was also a visitor to Alaska, being one of the early artists who visited there after the purchase of the Territory. Although Sharp was completely deaf from a childhood accident, he reportedly had a cheerful nature and was an avid traveler, always seeking learning experiences about other cultures. From childhood he was interested in Indians, and at age fourteen, because of his deafness, left public school to study art in Cincinnati at the McMicken School and the Cincinnati Academy of Art. His studio was in the same building as that of Henry Farny who gave him books on Pueblo Indians. At age 22, Sharp went to Antwerp, Belgium where he studied with Charles Verlat, and two years later he began traveling the American West, going first on a sketching trip that included Santa Fe, places in California, and north to the Columbia River. He did numerous paintings of Indian figures to record their disappearing culture. In 1886, he returned to Europe for more study and enrolled at the Academy in Munich with Karl Von Marr. He also traveled with Frank Duveneck, famous Cincinnati artist, through Spain and Italy. From 1892 to 1902, he taught classes at the Cincinnati Art Academy, and from 1895 to 1896, attended the Academie Julian in Paris where he met Ernest Blumenschein and Bert Geer Phillips, who later joined him in Taos. In 1893, Joseph Sharp first went to Taos, and his sketches from that trip were published in Harper's Weekly. He began making summer trips West to sketch Indians, and in 1902, he painted in Arizona, California, Wyoming, and Montana. An admiring President Teddy Roosevelt had a studio built for Sharp at the Custer Battle Field site. From there Sharp traveled throughout the Plains to paint about 200 portraits of living Indians who had been in that battle. To achieve these paintings, he endured much severe weather and physical hardship. By 1912, Sharp was a permanent resident of Taos, living across from Kit Carson's homesite and painting many of the Pueblo Indians in their daily activities. His longtime close friend and model was Jerry (Elk Foot) Mirabal, who, dying in 1980, lived to be 110. Sharp continued to travel, going frequently to Hawaii and California during the winters where he completed numerous floral landscapes. He also stayed in close touch with his hometown of Cincinnati, where he relied upon friends in the Cincinnati Art Museum for canvas and certain types of paint, and in December, 1915, he held the first of fifteen annual Christmas exhibitions there. He died in Pasadena on August 29, 1953. His Indian paintings are prized for their detailed accuracy, and many of them are in the collection of the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Charles Deas This Early Western Oil Painting by Charles Deas is a heart rendering depiction of a Native American at his Teepee. The size is 18&amp;quot;x 13&amp;quot;. The condition is good, no restoration. The frame appears original. The painting is signed on the lower left. Charles Deas, grandson of the Revolutionary War leader Ralph Izard, was exposed to art as a visitor at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art and in Sully&amp;acirc;s studio while receiving his general education from John Sanderson. He failed to gain appointment to West Point in 1936, when the Hudson River outdoor life attracted him more than life as a cadet. He then spent two years at the National Academy in New York City, exhibiting beginning 1838 &amp;acirc;a variety of cabinet pictures drawn chiefly from familiar life.&amp;acirc; During a visit to Philadelphia in 1838, he was enthralled by an exhibition of Catlin&amp;acirc;s Indian paintings: &amp;acirc;To visit the scenes of Nature&amp;acirc;s own children, to share the repast of the hunter and taste the wild excitement of frontier life.&amp;acirc; In 1840, Deas left the East to visit his brother at Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, only 10 years after Seth Eastman, at the same time as Stanley, and 10 to 20 years before the better-known Western artists. He collected sketches of Indians and frontier scenery. &amp;acirc;In passing from lodge to lodge, the most extraordinary incidents presented themselves, and in the stillness of the moonlit nights, the echoes of the Indian lover&amp;acirc;s flute blent with the battle-chant or the maiden&amp;acirc;s shrill song.&amp;acirc; In the winter of 1841 he visited Fort Winnebago, Fort Snelling, St. Anthony&amp;acirc;s Falls, and the Sioux. He had a permanent studio in St. Louis as his headquarters. In 1844, when he traveled to the Pawness, he was nicknamed &amp;acirc;Rocky Mountain&amp;acirc; because he dressed &amp;acirc;like a fur hunter&amp;acirc; and &amp;acirc;he could go where he pleased. Mr. Deas seemed to possess the whole secret of wining the good graces of the Indians. Henry Farny This Oil Painting by Henry Farny is a depiction of three Native Americans sitting on the open plains. The size is 16&amp;quot; x 21&amp;quot;. The condition is good, no restoration or in-painting. The frame is original. The painting is signed at the lower right. Henry Farny was born in Alsace, France. His parents fled to America, as political refugees, after the Napoleonic party came to power. They settled in Pennsylvania at the headwaters of the Allegheny River. Their home was near a Seneca Indian camp,and Farny's early encounters with the Seneca led to a lifelong interest in the Indian. The family moved to Cincinnati, where Henry found work as an apprentice lithographer. By the age of eighteen, he had work published in &amp;quot;Harper's Weekly&amp;quot;. The following year Farny went to Europe for three and a half years of study in Rome, Dusseldorf and Vienna. Returning to America, he worked as a book illustrator, revolutionizing the schoolbook industry when he salvaged the declining McGuffey Reader series with his illustrations. Farny made numerous trips to the West, including in 1878 a thousand-mile canoe trip down the Missouri River and in 1893, a journey to Montana to attend cermonies marking completion of the Northern Pacific transcontinental railroad. He was adopted by a tribe of Sioux Indians and named &amp;quot;Long Boots&amp;quot;. Unlike the work of many early western artists, Henry Farny's paintings met with almost instant acclaim and quick sale. His repeated trips to Indian encampments resulted in the storytelling type of art that was so typical of the times. Farny's miniature-like technique was void of the sensationalism which generally was the tool of the less accomplished artists of the day. Paintings by Henry Farny are &amp;quot;blue chip&amp;quot; in the art market; they have appreciated more in value per square inch than those of any other artist.
